Species and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Enterococcus Isolated from Clinical Materials

Abstract
Enterococcus became notorious because of the increasing nosocomial infections and the emergence of strains resistancte to¥â-lactam antibiotics and to high level aminoglycosides. The species and antimicrobial susceptibility of Enterococcus
isolated
during September 1991 to January 1992 at the Severance Hospital were determined. Among the 313 isolates 74.1% were E. faecalis, 14.7% E. faecium and 3.2% E. raffinosus. MIC range of ampicillin was ¡Â2 g/ml against E. fuecalis, but 0.5->128 g/ml
against
E. faecium. MIC90 of ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin were 2 g/ml against E. faecalis, but 8 g/ml and 32 g/ml, respectively, against E. faecium. Twenty per cent of E. faecalis were resistant to 2000 g/ml of gentamicin compared to 59% in E. faecium. In
conclusion, identification of species of all Enterococcus isolates and determination of high level aminoglycoside resistance of the isolates from severe infections were considered necessary for optimal care of the patients.
